He started his career with the San Bernardino Police Department in 1983 as a Patrol Officer. In 1996 he was transferred to the Traffic Division as a motorcycle enforcement officer.In 1989, Ernie was promoted to the rank of Corporal/Detective and returned to Patrol as a Field Training Officer until 1992 when he was moved to the Narcotics Division as a Detective. In 1995 Ernie was promoted to Sergeant. He held several positions during his tenure as a Sergeant to include oversight of a very successful undercover Grand Theft Auto Task Force, the Multiple Enforcement Team and Internal Affairs. He also led the department's Reserve Officer program. In 2004 Ernie attained the rank of Lieutenant and has served as a Watch Commander, the Traffic Bureau Commander and District Commander for the Central District. During his tenure, Ernie has been awarded the San Bernardino Police Department Police Cross and the Distinguished Service Medal. He has been nominated for the San Bernardino Chamber of Commerce Officer of the Year and has received the Latino Police Officer of Year Award from the Latino Police Officer's Association. Ernie is a graduate of California Baptist University with a Bachelors Science degree in Criminal Justice. Ernie is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy, Session #220 and the California P.O.S.T Supervisor Leadership Institute. Like all of our executive commanders, he has a California POST supervisory certificate and a POST management certificate.
