Who are Senior Companions?

Senior Companions are healthy adults 60+ years old who help other adults live independently. Senior Companions provide support to family caregivers. They assist with grocery shopping, transportation to medical appointments, meal preparation, encouraging clients to participate in daily activities, reminiscing, providing companionship and love.

Without the help of Senior Companions, many older adults would not be able to continue living at home and would need more expensive, less personal care in a nursing home.

Can You Be Someone's Senior Companion?

Senior Companions:

  • Are over 60 years of age
  • Can volunteer 20 hours a week
  • Have a limited income
  • Love to help their neighbors

Senior Companions become part of a team of caregivers. They alert doctors and family members to potential health problems. Senior Companions also provide short periods of relief to primary caregivers such as family members.

Helping Neighbors Stay Independent

You Benefit

As a Senior Companion, you'll receive:

  • Pre-service and on-going training
  • An annual physical examination
  • Supplemental insurance
  • Help with meal and transportation costs
  • A small stipend.
  • The joy of helping others live on their own.

Those You Help Benefit.

The individuals helped by Senior Companions receive:

  • Assistance with important daily tasks
  • Encouragement to remain active
  • A helping hand to make sure they take their medicine
  • A watchful eye to notice when they need extra care
  • A friendship that can last a lifetime.

You don't need medical or technical skills to be a Senior Companion. All you need to know is how to be a friend.

Senior Companions offer adults contact with the world outside of their homes and make their lives less lonely. Along the way, Senior Companions find out that few things feel as good as knowing they are needed.

Good Deeds that help everyone

Senior Companions are a vital resource to their communities. Become a Senior Companion today.

Just a small example of what Senior Companions did in one year.

  • Helped over 75,000 adults remain independent in their homes
  • Served as the "eyes and ears" to identify necessary services for over 12,000 adults in need
  • Provided rehabilitation, therapy and exercise to more than 8,000 adults with physical disabilities.

What is the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program?

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) helps individuals age 55 and older put their skills and life experience to work for their communities. RSVP volunteers serve from a few hours to forty hours a week. They do just about everything - from tutoring children and building homes for low-income families, to teaching computer skills and testing for water safety. However they choose to serve, RSVP volunteers meet critical community needs.

For twenty-five years, RSVP has matched problems to be solved with people willing to help. Today, more than 450,000 seniors participate in RSVP, making it one of the largest volunteer efforts in the nation.

Why do RSVP Volunteers get involved?

Some people feel a lack of productivity when they no longer have a regular work site or schedule. RSVP helps seniors stay active and involved. Volunteers join a large service network, learning new skills or using the know-how they've developed over a lifetime.

Many RSVP volunteers have lived in their communities for a long time. Because the community has given them so much, they see serving as a way to give something back. RSVP volunteers discover that when they give, they gain a lot too. Studies show that seniors who volunteer live longer, healthier, and more fulfilling lives.

What do RSVP Volunteers do?

RSVP volunteers choose how and where they want to serve. Many continue the type of work they enjoyed earlier in life, while others try something completely different. As an RSVP volunteer, you might mentor at-risk youth, make hospital visits, teach English to immigrants, organize neighborhood watch groups, or help people recover from natural disasters.

RSVP volunteers may commit to serving in one or more ongoing efforts. The number of hours they serve is flexible. Volunteers will receive a pre-service orientation, followed by appropriate on-the-job training from the agency or organization where they are placed. While on duty, volunteers also receive supplemental insurance.

RSVP Volunteers - Getting things done

RSVP is a cost-effective way to solve critical problems in education, public safety, the environment, and other critical human needs. Last year, RSVP volunteers provided more then 91 million hours of service to America, valued at more than $1.2 billion - a 35-fold return on the federal investment.
