News Image “GEM” Program Kicks Off at Cal State
The Growth, Excellence, and Maturity program (GEM) is a unique and intensive 11- day career exploration camp held each summer for low income at-risk teenagers aged 18-21. The program serves to divert young people from the influence of gangs and drugs to channel their energies and abilities in a positive direction. The program was initially started by retired Falcons football player now Lutheran pastor, Mr. O. Dennis Mims. The camp sessions are held on local college campuses.

On Thursday, August 26, the Feldheym Central Library will be closed for air conditioning maintenance. The 65,000 sq. ft facility located at 555 West 6th Street, will be replacing the cooling towers that service the building.

News Image Library Theft Devastates Collection
Sunday, August 15th between 8 and 10 a.m., a window was shattered at the Rowe Branch Library of the San Bernardino Library System located at 108 East Marshall Blvd.  An unknown suspect entered through the broken window and removed four binders containing approximately 1,000 dvds from the library's media collection.  No suspects have been identified at this time.

News Image Feldheym Library Receives a Grant for CA Family Place Library Program
San Bernardino Public Library's Feldheym Library was one of thirteen California public libraries selected as a 2010/2011 grant recipient for California’s Family Place Library Program, a statewide initiative that helps create family/early childhood space in the children’s areas of local public libraries. Equipped with toys, books, and comfortable furniture, these settings support early-learning interactions between young children (ages 0 to 3), parents, and caregivers, and encourage the use of public libraries by families with children.

Now Students can connect to Expert Tutors via the Internet at SBPL.  Children and teenagers in San Bernardino never have to be stumped by a tough homework assignment again! Students from kindergarten to 12th grade, those in introductory-level college courses, and adult learners can simply visit any of SBPL's four libraries or visit the library's Web site using their home computer, lap tops or phones, to get on-demand, free help from qualified tutors.

News Image Local Chief Officer Chosen to Attend National Symposium
Fire Marshal Doug Dupree, member of the San Bernardino Fire Department was one of two representatives chosen from the California Fire Service, to attend the symposium that will bring together over 150 national experts to learn about model fire prevention programs for their communities. The Model Performance Fire Prevention Symposium is scheduled for June 28 and 29 in Baltimore, Maryland.

News Image Cool off with the “Low-On-Cash Dash to Splash” Program
    The City of San Bernardino 2010 Aquatics Season will be featuring the "Low-On-Cash Dash to Splash" program at the Jerry Lewis Family Swim Center. This program guarantees a fun time and low cost to keep cool in the hot weather.   
    The program begins on Saturday, May 29 and runs through the Memorial Day Holiday weekend. After that it will continue on all weekends up to June 21.  The swim center features an Olympic size main pool with a giant waterslide. There is also a wading pool with a “frog” slide for the toddlers and many different spray apparatus for all to enjoy.

The Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department are pleased to offer "Guard Start" at many different swim venues throughout San Bernardino City. This is a new junior lifeguard program for youth ages 11-14. The program is designed to build a foundation of knowledge, attitudes, and skills for future lifeguards.

News Image City Makes a Splash into 2010
The Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department (PRCSD) are helping San Bernardino residents stay cool and fit this summer.

Beginning June 21, open swim activities will take place at the Nunez Park, Rudy C. Hernandez and Mill Community Center pools. Play sessions operate Monday through Saturday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., for a daily fee of .50 cents to a dollar.

 The City of San Bernardino and the San Bernardino Historical and Pioneer Society will celebrate the 2nd annual "Railroad Days" at the historic Sante Fe Depot on May 8 and 9th.  
  In coordination with Amtrak's National Train Day and the City of San Bernardino’s Bi-Centennial Celebration, “Railroad Days” is sure to be a memorable event for all ages ranging from nine to 99.  This year the main attraction will be the historical 3751 Steam Locomotive which will arrive Saturday morning between 10 and 11a.m.

Santa Claus and his merry helpers will ride the rails and distribute gifts to hundreds of deserving children on board the 18th annual BNSF Santa Claus Express train as it travels to San Bernardino on Saturday December 6 at 9:00 AM and again at 1:00 PM.  At least 1,000 invited children and adults are expected to ride the special BNSF train consisting of two locomotives and five passenger cars as it travels through the Southern California region.  Children are selected for the free rides by the Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children, and other organizations. Frederick, son of a wealthy 19th century man was to be apprenticed to a pilot, but due to a hard-of-hearing nursery maid, was instead apprenticed to a pirate. Not just any pirate, but the Pirate King, leader of the not-so-fierce "Pirates of Penzance". But now his indentures are over, Frederick's sense of duty calls him to rid the seas of these rather simple ruffians. Chinese New Year is the longest and most important celebration in the Chinese calendar. The Chinese year 4706 begins on Feb. 7, 2008.  Chinese months are reckoned by the lunar calendar, with each month beginning on the darkest day. News Image City's Fleet Division Awarded Grant Funds to Increase Air Quality

In a continuous effort to improve air quality, the City's fleet division recently ordered 20 Liquid Natural as (LNG) refuse vehicles and will be ordering an additional 13 LNG vehicles the next fiscal year. These clean fueled vehicles will greatly reduce emissions in comparison to the older diesel-powered vehicles they will replace.

On September 17, 2007, Mary Renter, a direct descendent of James Waters donated to the City four oil paintings of the Waters family and ten chairs from the Waters box in the Opera House. 

 

In 1882 James Waters and Herman Brinkmeyer built an Opera House in San Bernardino four years before Los Angeles built one.

We will meet at the Heritage House at 9:00 a.m., where we will a have a short presentation by Flood Control engineers, including the Director of the San Bernardino County Department of Public Works, Vana Olson. After that we will board buses and travel to the historic watercourses of San Bernardino. About 56 minutes after the San Bernardino Police Department issued a nationwide AMBER ALERT for MR. JOSEPH SANCHEZ and his four children, an alert motorist on I-210 in Upland saw the suspect vehicle.  The four children were safely recovered and returned to their mother in San Bernardino. Mr. Sanchez is now in custody.

SBPD Traffic Alert
Please be advised we anticipate vehicular traffic flow will be slowed in the area of the “Black History Parade,” scheduled for Sat., Feb. 4, from 9 a.m. to noon.  The route will extend southward down E Street from 8th Street to 2nd Street.  The route then turns eastbound onto 2nd Street and extends to D Street.  From there, the route turns northbound onto D Street, ending at Court Street.   Court Street will be closed between D and E StreetsClick here for more information
