Traffic Sgt R. Lawhead explains that on Thursday, March 11, 2010, at about 12:06 AM a uniformed patrol officer from the San Bernardino Police Department attempted to make a traffic enforcement stop on a motorcycle in the area of West 16th Street and North E Street in San Bernardino.  When the officer activated his emergency lights, the motorcyclist failed to stop and accelerated away at a high rate of speed.

According to witnesses, as the motorcyclist went westbound on West Highland Avenue at North H Street, he appeared to be traveling in excess of 100 MPH when he lost control of his motorcycle and struck the north curb of West Highland Avenue.  The motorcyclist was ejected from the motorcycle and suffered major injuries.  Paramedics from the San Bernardino City Fire Department responded to the scene and provided emergency medical aid.  They pronouced the motorcyclist dead-at-the-scene.

The motorcyclist is not being identified at this time pending notification of his next-of-kin.  It is believed that the motorcyclist had outstanding warrants for his arrest and was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision.

The San Bernardino Police Department's Traffic Unit is investigating this collision, and is asking anyone with information about this collision to call 909-384-5735 or the Police Department's 24-hour Hotline 909-384-5656.
