San Bernardino Receives Clean California Grant for 4th Street Beautification Project
Governor Gavin Newsom announced March 1 the State of California has awarded the city of San Bernardino $722,772 as part of the competitive $266 million Clean California Local Grant beautification program. The funds will be used to restore and beautify the 4th street alley area between D Street and E Street in downtown San Bernardino.
“This is just another step in our efforts to revitalize downtown,” said Ward One Council Member Theodore Sanchez, who represents the downtown area. “Thanks to our Public Works staff for pursuing these funds. I look forward to attending events there with residents and visitors very soon.”
The 4th Street alley area between D and E Street is in the heart of the Historic Arts District of downtown San Bernardino. The beautification project will include the construction of a 500 square foot stage, an arched neon sign across the alley entrance; and wall murals to be painted by local artists.
The project will also plant trees, shrubs, and a living garden wall, install benches and tables; replace deteriorated ground asphalt, upgrade the existing irrigation system, add two bike racks, add outdoor lighting, install trash cans, and an automatic gate; The City will complement the construction project with arts, educational and outreach programs.
The Clean California Local Grant Program is a competitive statewide program created to beautify and clean up local streets and roads, tribal lands, pathways, transit centers, and transform public spaces into points of pride. Assembly Bill 149 created the Clean California Local Grant Program of 2021, and it is administered by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans),
San Bernardino Interim Public Works Director Alex Qishta stated that work on the project is expected to take place later this year.
